Gert Urhahn is co-founder of The Spontaneous City International. He is a consensus builder with a great collaborative spirit and a focus on strategic thinking and creating value.
Gert has previously founded and directed Urhahn Urban Design and was a Senior Urban Designer at the Municipality of Amsterdam, where he strongly engaged in the redevelopment of the Amsterdam waterfronts. Through his 50 years of practice, he has accumulated a broad international portfolio of projects in cities such as Amsterdam, London, Antwerp or Oaxaca and has published extensively on regeneration strategies and urban typologies. His co-authored book ‘The Spontaneous City’ became a reference for a new alternative practice in urban planning, advocating for small-scale, flexible and market responsive development.
Gert holds a MSc in Architecture and Urban Design from the faculty of Architecture, University of Technology, TU Karlsruhe in Germany. He is regularly invited to speak at international conferences, lead professional seminars and round tables and judge architecture and urban design competitions.
Gert is currently a board member of Pakhuis de Zwijger and a member of the Dutch professional association of urban planners (BNSP). Previosuly, he chaired ‘The Spontaneous City’ working group at the International Federation for Housing and Planning, was a member of Amsterdam’s urban development council (ARS) and a lecturer at the Amsterdam Academie van Bouwkunst.
Gert is fluent in German, Dutch and English.
