QUATRO DISTRITO

Experts Meeting on the Redevelopment of an Industrial Mixed-Use Area

PROCESS FACILITATION

Porto Alegre, Brazil | 2014

Quarto Distrito is an industrial area stretched over seven kilometres in the city of Porto Alegre. The area thrived between 1800 and the early 1900, and developed into a fully-fledged part of the city with housing, shops and public amenities along with small and bigger industrial plants and depots. Despite its history and its key location between the city centre and the airport, Quarto Distrito suffers from a number of plights, including flooding, an overloaded infrastructure, high vacancy rates and poor waste management. Over time, these issues generated  a large number of social and economic  problems which hinder organic growth and shade a negative stigma.

To put a positive spin to Quarto Distrito and revaluate its great assets, a resilient long-term strategy is needed to undergo a structural transformation during the upcoming decades. This transformation will tackle challenges and look for possibilities for entrepreneurship at different levels, and to attract FDI with national and international collaboration.

Different stakeholders and experts have gathered for three days under the guidance of SPcitI to clear ideas and define entry points to possible solutions.
